Study

Studying can be a difficult thing, not only in high school, but in college as well. Here are some tips for some good study habits:

1. Don’t study last Minute: Studying last minute or “cramming” does not do you any good, its scientifically proven, so don’t do it!

2. Have a study buddy: Studying by yourself can be tedious, your partner will keep you awake and focused, and will make studying a whole lot easier.

3. Take Breaks: Studying for hours upon hours, will make you depressed and unable to think, study for an hour then take a break, this is not a race!

4. Ask for help: Asking teachers and other students will not hurt you, only help you!

Reccomendations

Reccomendations are a very important step in the college process. In most cases, reccomendations come from your junior year teachers, its usually two but can vary. Though its not essential to have your junior year professor write your recommendations. Instead go through which teachers you enjoyed having in your past three years. Figured out which classes you did good in, and which teachers you had a strong relationship with. Having a strong relationship with one of your professors will benefit you because those teachers will write a thorough college recommendation for you. Make sure you sit down with your professor and let them know how important this is to you. Often so many professors will have to write so many reccomendations that they end up rushing through them. The last thing you need is to have your teacher write a bad one for you! So really take the time to think it through so you can have two very strong college recommendations!

The Importance of an Interview

When you come to the point and realize what schools you want to apply to, a very important factor that you should take into account is interviews. Scheduling an interview with a college shows that you are highly interested in the school that you are applying to, and it gives the interviewer of that school a chance to really get to know you as a person. Which can be very beneficial if they are deciding between you and another applicant! Interviews can be a very stressful process but remember your not alone. Interviews really can help you get accepted to the college you want to especially if your grades are borderline. That is why it is a very important he or she remembers your name! Here are some great tips to make your interviewer remember you!

Dont Be “That Guy”

Ahh Senior year of high school, what a relieve! You’ve been through three years of great memories, made some of your closest friends that you will have in your life forever, and now its time to start a new chapter in your life. What is that ladies and Gentleman!? College! You’ve put in hours upon hours studying for those big tests, spent countless hours spent on homework, studied all night for those final exams where they put you in a room with 400 other kids… all so you can have a good GPA right? Well I’m glad it payed off, well hopefully for most of you! Anyways upper class men always told me “oh senior year doesn’t count towards your GPA, and you can slack off and class and on and on and on. Well yes this is true, but believe me do not be that guy! Do not be that guy that stops doing their home work and stops studying for test. News Flash, your first two trimester grades are sent to the colleges you apply to! Thats right, let me warn you now because you dont want to be this guy. Two kids in my graduation class got into there dream school, both smart kids, but let me tell you something they slacked off there senior year. They both got accepted to their school of choice, until the school asked to see there senior grades, and then they where later revoked! Thats right… those three years of hard work all flushed down the toilet for one or two trimesters. And believe me when I tell you, senior year is very easy to get good grades doing minimum work (as long as you attempt the work some what). Anyways these two kids where known as the kids to not be like, thus giving them the name “DONT BE THAT GUY.” These two kids grades where so bad one of them only passed one class and the other did not pass any. I kid you not! Colleges dont want slackers, so dont be a slacker..please, be the right guy!

Applying to College

156324808Each year millions of kids apply to college, hoping they can go to the college of their dreams. For many this can be a stressful process, here are some very useful tips to keep you stress free!
1. If you know your dream school apply early decision-
Applying early decision means you must attend this school, so be sure that this school is your top choice! Applying early decision can make your college application process so much easier because you hear back very quickly. You also have have a greater chance of getting accepted to that college by applying by early decision. If you get accepted your done with the college application process! If not do not stress, its better to know sooner that later knowing that you did not get accepted, rather then waiting to hear regular decision that you did not get in.

2. Talk to your college counselor-
If your school has a college counselor please take advantage of this. If your school does not have a college counselor then eitheir talk to your guidance consleor, or I would highly suggest hiring a college counselor. College counselors can make your college application process so much easier. Your counselor will take your GPA, SAT/ACTS and your extra cirriculars, and give you a list of target schools, and reach schools to apply to. It is important to talk to your college counselor about what schools interest you, and what major your also interested in. College Counselors are hear to help you, and will also put a great word in for colleges that your applying to.

3. DO NOT wait last minute
The college process can be very tedious. Do not, I repeat do not wait last minute! Applying to a college takes some time and effort, because most colleges want you to write some sort of essay or paragraph for information about something about you, or something that has occurred in your life. It is important to know when the college application dead lines are for the schools that you are applying to, so you do not miss the deadline! Waiting last minute will cause nothing but stress, and Im sure you have enough stress as it is!

Advantages of going to a private school

Private school has its benefits, getting a 4.0 at a private school looks a whole lot better then getting a 4.0 GPA in a public school. It is highly recommended to recommend private school to your parents because it helps prepare you for college. It is a great experience overall and it also gets you involved into the community. Some private schools show you list of percentiles of an acceptance rate between that private school and a regular high school when applying to college, and the numbers are a lot higher at private school. Is private school right for you?

Be on time!

Some teachers big pet peeve is showing up on time. Do not be the student that shows up at first period at 8:10AM every morning when class starts at 8:00AM. Or if you just ate lunch and you showed up 5 minutes late to your fifth period class and it happens every day. Being late everyday gives the teacher bad vibes about you, and will not take you as a studious student. So be on time, set an alarm in the morning, and wake up 20 minutes earlier so you can make it to class on time. Keep a watch on you so you do not lose track of time. Not being on time makes you look bad, I promise you.

Heres a quick example of what can happen, on a test day.

Dont Skip School

Stating the obvious here, but avoid skipping classes, especially if your not sick. Missing classes makes you fall behind, and not showing up to school looks bad on you. Teachers notice if your not there, and you do not want to get that negative representation. Skipping school has its consequences, especially if you get caught by either the school, or your parents. Last thing you need is your parents to give you a lecture on why skipping school is bad!

Here is a little comical video on what happens if you skip school

Do not get on the teachers bad side

There is nothing worse then getting on a teachers bad side, especially in classes such as English, and History. As illogical as this sounds teachers do have there favorites. If you are constantly disrupting the class, getting kicked out of class, and not doing your home work, then you are going to get on the teachers bad side. This is why being on a teachers bad side, is bad!

Being graded hard:This is the big one
When writing papers, you will be graded harder, so even if your not that idiotic of a student you will still be graded much harder, trust me.

Wont Give you extra credit: Some teachers will give you an extra credit assignment if you ask for it, but if your on the teachers bad side their is a very good chance you will not receive that extra credit.

When it comes to Homework

Dont do it…Just kidding! Listen, I honestly do not understand how some people did three hours a homework a night back in high school. When it comes to homework, take it step by step. Complete one subject of homework during the night, then take a break. Don’t try to rush through all your home work at once it will only make your life miserable and stressful. If you have a free period during school, use it wisely. Use it to get your homework done so you do not have to worry about it later at night. Especially if your doing an extracurricular activity after school nobody wants to have hours upon hours of homework after football practice. Homework is important in your classes because if you understand the homework their is a really good chance you will understand the test or quiz, so do not be that guy that never does his homework! Its an easy grade in most classes so do it!
